Valentine’s Day…overpriced roses, heart shaped chocolates and soppy cards? The real meaning of Saint Valentine?s Day may be?lost on us millennials so let me take you back to the third century in Rome.
Valentinus refused to worship twelve gods so he was imprisoned. Whilst in prison he began teaching the governors blind daughter and healed her of her blindness through prayer. On his last day before his execution he wrote the girl a note and signed it ?Your Valentine?. He was executed on the 14th of February, thereafter it was known as St Valentine’s Day.

We want to believe that the meaningless gestures make the occasion but sadly St Valentine’s Day has been turned into another Hallmark holiday. But what the message of Valentine?s day should really be about is giving people something that money can’t buy. Perhaps we should make someone feel good, we give them a complement, we do them a favour, we offer them a cup of tea and we have a good aul chat. We give our time and energy not our money to make someone feel good. When we feel good we look better, we hold our heads higher, we stand up taller and act more confident. We at Element 8 know that beauty starts from within.?So unlike our good old friend Saint V we are not going to cure someone’s blindness but maybe we can make someone in our lives feel better in some other small way. Because the best things in life are not things at all.
